My first trip to the Black Hills was nearly a decade ago during a road trip with my brother Jim (pictured above) and some friends across America. There’s something almost spiritual about this place (just ask the native tribes who’ve lived here for nearly 10,000 years). Maybe it’s just the dazzling rock formations, beautiful pine forests, incredible wildlife, mesmerizing magic hour, and insane amount of recreation opportunities that exist here. Of all the magical natural places I’ve traveled to in America (and beyond), the Black Hills National Forest tops the list. Fly fishing below the spillway is exceptional. Facilities include a full service marina with gasoline, oil, groceries, and food service. Forest facilities include an 88 unit campground, a group campground, swim beach, picnic areas, two boat launches, a paved accessible trail, day use trails and portions of both the Centennial and Deerfield trails. Large brown trout are caught in Rapid Creek above and below the reservoir. The Bureau of Reclamation manages the dam and water. It is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest, boasting 14 miles of shoreline and 150 foot depths on 800 acres. Pactola Reservoir is located 15 miles west of Rapid City. There are two boat launch areas one at Dutchman Campground (south side) and one at the Custer Trails Campground (north side). The complex has three campgrounds, two picnic areas and the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail (Trail #40L). Ice fishing, snowmobiling and ice skating are popular winter sports here. Castle Creek flows into and out of the reservoir and provides additional fishing opportunities. Deerfield Reservoir is located 20 miles west of Hill City, SD. ![]()
